ALAMEDA, Calif. Custom Washington Redskins Jerseys . - The Oakland Raiders hired Denver defensive co-ordinator Jack Del Rio as their new head coach on Wednesday in hopes that the Bay Area native who grew up cheering for the Raiders can return the team to its glory days.A person with knowledge of the deal confirmed on condition of anonymity that Del Rio signed a four-year deal to replace interim coach Tony Sparano. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement from the team wasnt expected until Thursday.Del Rio becomes Oaklands ninth head coach since the start of the 2003 season. The Raiders have the NFLs worst record in that span, having failed to produce a single winning season or playoff berth.Del Rio replaces Sparano, who was elevated from offensive line coach during the past season to replace the fired Dennis Allen and had hoped to keep the job. Oakland went 3-9 under Sparano after losing the first four games under Allen. The Raiders interviewed at least seven candidates but only Del Rio got a formal second interview. He emerged as the favourite after Denvers season ended Sunday with a playoff loss to Indianapolis. After meeting with owner Mark Davis in Denver during the Broncos bye week, Del Rio had his second interview in the Bay Area on Tuesday with Davis and general manager Reggie McKenzie. This marks the second straight time the Raiders hired a Denver defensive co-ordinator as their coach. Allen spent one year running the Broncos defence before being hired by McKenzie in 2012. He went 8-28 before getting fired last season.Del Rio grew up in Hayward, just a short drive from the Coliseum. He went to Raiders games as a kid and even played a high school championship game at the Coliseum. His parents are still season-ticket holders and now will get the chance to watch their son coach their favourite team.Del Rio has been defensive co-ordinator in Denver for the past three seasons, helping the Broncos win three straight AFC West titles.Kansas City Royals bench coach Don Wakamatsu, a teammate of Del Rios in football, basketball and baseball at Hayward High School, said he is thrilled Del Rio will get to go back and coach near his family.Wakamatsu and Del Rio have stayed close through the years, and Del Rio visited spring training when Wakamatsu managed the Seattle Mariners. He came to San Francisco for a World Series game in October.Hes one of the best ones out there, Wakamatsu said. I dont think they could have made a better hire. Thats not just me as a friend talking. Thats knowing the intelligence and leadership skills he has. Ive always had utmost respect for him as an athlete, coach and friend.Denver ranked third in total defence and tied for 16th in scoring defence this past season. The Broncos were third in total defence and 10th in scoring defence in Del Rios three years with the team. Before that, he was head coach in Jacksonville for nine seasons. Del Rio had a 68-71 regular-season record with the Jaguars and made the playoffs in 2005 and 2007, winning one playoff game in his second post-season trip. He was fired with five games remaining in the 2011 season. He has extensive NFL experience, having played 12 seasons as a linebacker and coaching with New Orleans, Baltimore and Carolina before getting the head coaching job with the Jaguars. This is just the fourth time the Raiders have hired a coach with previous head coaching experience. Neither Joe Bugel, Norv Turner nor Art Shell in his second stint managed to get into the playoffs.Despite the 3-13 record last season, the Raiders do have some pieces to build around led by quarterback Derek Carr and linebacker Khalil Mack. Those two were part of a talented rookie class that also included guard Gabe Jackson, defensive tackle Justin Ellis and cornerback TJ Carrie. The other candidates who interviewed for the job were former Raiders, Denver and Washington coach Mike Shanahan, Philadelphia offensive co-ordinator Pat Shurmur, San Francisco tight ends coach Eric Mangini, Seattle offensive co-ordinator Darrell Bevell, and Indianapolis offensive co-ordinator Pep Hamilton.Del Rios hiring in Oakland might also facilitate the acquisition of unrestricted free agent nose tackle Terrance Pot Roast Knighton, who has thrived under Del Rios tutelage in Jacksonville and Denver. While Knighton has said repeatedly he wanted to stay in Denver, he recently told The Associated Press, I want to be wherever Jack is. Ill just leave it at that.___AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Stapleton contributed to this report___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Geron Christian Redskins Jersey . Vonn had another scary moment at Saturdays World Cup downhill in Val dIsere, ending up clutching her knee in pain after losing her balance and missing a gate. But she gave a reassuring answer shortly afterward, saying no new damage had been done to the surgically repaired knee, and that her plans for the Sochi Olympics were still intact. Simona Halep of Romania claimed the fifth title of her career by beating Samantha Stosur of Australia 7-6 (1), 6-2 in the womens final. After trading sets, Gasquet trailed 4-3 in the decider but broke back to 4-4 in a game that went to seven deuces with Kukushkin constantly failing on his forehand shots.COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The Vancouver Whitecaps hadnt experienced a loss in over two months before falling to the Colorado Rapids 2-0 on Saturday. Dillon Powers and Vicente Sanchez both scored in the first half as the Rapids snapped the Whitecaps (5-3-7) franchise-best unbeaten streak at eight matches. But as head coach Carl Robinson saw it, it wasnt that big of a deal. "Weve lost one in nine," Robinson said. "I wont get carried away." Despite the loss, Vancouver had reason to celebrate as Whitecaps Mehdi Ballouchy, Steven Beitashour and Nigel Reo-Coker all made their returns after various lengths of absences. Ballouchy played 20 minutes in his first game in nearly 11 months since tearing his right ACL last season. He tore his left ACL two years ago, and played only five games for the San Jose Earthquake before the most recent injury. "Its been a long time," Ballouchy said. "When you do an ACL, you come back, and you do it again, these are long-term injuries. A lot of players dont come back. Its been a steep, steep hill and Im happy to be playing again." Reo-Coker was back in action after missing Wednesdays scoreless draw against Montreal to be in New York for the birth of his first child, while Beitashour was back after a long trek back from Brazil, where he played for Irans national team in the World Cup pool play. Vancouver hadnt lost since falling to Los Angeles 1-0 on April 19. It was the second of a brief two-game losing streak that started with a home loss to Colorado a week earlier. "Weve lost three games out of 15. Its not bad," said Reo-Coker. "Every team has spells like this — even the top teams. Were going through it now. We have so much belief and confidencee in this team that were going to bounce back. Pernell McPhee Redskins Jersey. Its a sign and test of how good we are." Reo-Coker said the birth of his daughter Scarlet changed his life "completely." "Its fantastic," he said. "Its something you cant put into words until you go through." He had a less memorable moment late in the first half when he fouled Sanchez in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Sanchez easily beat goalie David Ousted in the 36th minute to give the Rapids their second goal. "It was just miscommunication between David and myself," Reo-Coker said. "I saw David coming out and we kind of hesitated amongst each other, no one really took command of the full situation." Robinson had no issue with the call. "Second goal, it was a blatant penalty," he said. Powers hit the bar in the 17th minute and put a shot through the legs of a Vancouver defender three minutes later to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. The Rapids had another chance in the 27th minute, but were turned away by Ousted. Vancouver had two solid chances in the second half but Pedro Morales put a shot wide in the 63rd minute and Johnny Leversons laser in the 77th minute was saved by Clint Irwin. Colorado had 19 shots overall to Vancouvers five. "Were going to win games where we dont deserve to and were going to lose games we deserve to win," Robinson said. "Tonight we got what we deserved." Robinson didnt play Beitashour, opting instead to give him a rest after a long period of travel. "Beitas had three flights and in total its probably 16 hours of flying," Robinson said. "What I didnt want to do is risk an injury to him. I made the decision before the game." ' ' '
